When you look at the prices of hardwood flooring, you may be tempted to think it’s too expensive for your budget. However, you may not be seeing the whole picture. Once you understand the true cost of having hardwood floors in your home, you may decide it’s worth it.
Actual Prices
There are two things you should know about the list price for hardwood floors. First, they can vary a lot by species of wood and whether the product is solid wood or engineered wood. Engineered wood uses wood products with a top layer of solid wood, and it’s often less expensive than solid wood.
If you choose a local product for your floors, it is likely to be less expensive because you don’t have the transport fees added in. Another factor in flooring is whether the cost of installation is added into the price or if it is charged separately. The bottom line is that if you shop for hardwood floors, ask about different price ranges to find a product that fits your budget.
Additional Charges
Another aspect of any flooring installation including hardwood are the extra charges you may incur. They aren’t included in the price or even always the quote for new floors. Just make sure you know if they are part of installation or what the extra fees are.
Furniture removal – if you don’t remove furniture from the room where the floors are being installed, you may have to pay a fee to have it moved and replaced.
Disposal of old floors – the old floor may need to be removed and disposed of, which could result in an extra charge.
Floor preparation – your sub-floor may need to be prepped after removing the old floor.
Delivery of product – your wood floors will have to be delivered to your home and this may be an additional charge
Additional materials – Other materials such as nails, adhesive, etc. may be required and are listed separately in the invoice
Financing charges – if you finance your floors rather than paying cash, you’ll have interest added on to the total cost
Added Value
While hardwood floors are definitely not a cheap option for your home, you cannot just consider the initial price and charges to determine the total cost. Hardwood floors are designed to last much longer than carpet and tile. Whereas you may replace your carpet every 10 -20 years, you probably won’t replace your floors again, especially if you choose solid wood.
Add the cost of installing carpet and multiply it by two or even three times, and you’ll see the two options are much more comparable. In addition, hardwood doesn’t lose its value like carpet. Even if it becomes faded and scratched, it can be re-sanded and stained. Carpet must be replaced, so it can decrease the value of your home when you try to sell with old flooring.
When you look at the big picture, you’ll see that hardwood floors are actually quite affordable. They may a lovely and long-term solution to designing your home.
